    Many times when I swim in a pool my ears hurt if I go too deep. I am worried that this will happen when I dive and then I will not enjoy myself. How can I correct this?

    I think that this is something that you are able to control and should be taught in diving classes. If they do not mention it, perhaps you can bring it up and ask what you can do to control this.

    Good suggestion Joek. I would think that there would be plenty of people that have this issue. Surely I can not be the only one that has pressure like this if I am too deep. I do hope to learn some good tricks for this when I take my classes.

    If you’ve flown in an airplane, or gone up/down in a fas elevator in a tall building you would have felt the squeeze. When diving the feeling is similar to what you experience when a plane is preparing for landing.

    You feel pressure in your ears and you have to equalize to relieve the, this involves forcing air into your ears, most often by holding your nose and blowing. Only real difference in diving is it happens much faster and much more frequently.

    As soon as you feel pressure starting to build you should equalize. If you are descending and you feel pain you should stop, and ideally ascend a little to ease the discomfort and equalize then continue your descent. You should never force if, and if you have trouble you should finish the dive.

    There are a number of techniques taught, but a lot of it comes down to what works and feels comfortable for you.

    As an example, at sea level you are at 1ATM (atmosphere), if you go all the way to space you will be at 0ATM.. if you go to 10M below the surface of the water you will be at 2ATM, 20M below the surface and you are at 3ATM.. so as you can see pressure changes rapidly under water, and highlights the importance of equalizing regularly.
